Christmas Around the World: Iceland’s Yule Lads

Hello adventurers! It’s your favorite globetrotting storyteller, Archibold Clutterbuck, here to guide you on a magical Christmas journey. Are you ready to explore how Christmas is celebrated around the world? Grab your festive spirit, and let’s dive into our first stop—beautiful Iceland!

Now, Iceland isn’t just covered in snowy landscapes and shimmering northern lights during Christmas—it’s also home to a quirky and exciting tradition involving not one, not two, but 13 Santa Clauses! Yes, you heard that right—13! Let me introduce you to the delightful (and sometimes mischievous) Yule Lads.

Who Are the Yule Lads?

The Yule Lads are Icelandic Christmas characters who make the holiday season full of surprises. Unlike the jolly St. Nick you might know, each Yule Lad has their own unique personality—and let me tell you, they can be quite cheeky! There’s Spoon-Licker, who loves to steal spoons to lick; Door-Slammer, who sneaks around slamming doors at night; and Sausage-Swiper, who just can’t resist snatching sausages from the kitchen. How silly is that?

How Do Icelandic Kids Celebrate?

Starting 13 days before Christmas, each night one Yule Lad visits homes to leave presents—or pranks! Icelandic children place a shoe on their windowsill before bed, along with a little snack for the Yule Lad. If they’ve been good, they’ll wake up to find a sweet treat inside their shoe. But if they’ve been naughty... eek! They might find a stinky, rotten potato instead. Imagine waking up to that on Christmas morning!

Why Are the Yule Lads Special?

The Yule Lads bring a sense of fun, anticipation, and a bit of silliness to the Christmas season. They remind us that no matter how busy we are with holiday preparations, there’s always room for surprises and laughter. Plus, their stories are tied to Iceland’s rich folklore, which includes trolls, elves, and even a giant Christmas cat called Jólakötturinn. But that’s a tale for another time!

Your Turn to Celebrate

Want to celebrate like Icelanders? Here’s a fun idea: place a shoe by your window tonight, and ask your family to leave a little treat or surprise for you to find in the morning. You can even create your own Yule Lad character—what would their name and mischief be? Perhaps “Toy-Hider” or “Hot-Chocolate-Sipper”? Get creative!

That’s it for today’s adventure, my little explorers. What do you think about Iceland’s Christmas traditions? Would you like to meet the Yule Lads? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
