Christmas Around the World: Spain’s Tio de Nadal

Hola, adventurers! Today, we’re off to Spain to meet one of the quirkiest Christmas characters ever—the Tio de Nadal, also known as the Christmas Log.

Who Is Tio de Nadal?

Tio de Nadal is a wooden log with a happy painted face and a red hat. Kids “feed” him treats like nuts and raisins throughout December and keep him cozy under a blanket. But the real fun happens on Christmas Eve!

What Happens to the Log?

On Christmas Eve, children grab sticks and… WHACK! They beat poor Tio de Nadal while singing a special song, encouraging him to “poop” out candy and small presents. It might sound silly, but it’s a beloved tradition that fills the house with laughter and joy.

Make Your Own Tio de Nadal

Want to join the fun? Grab a small log or box, decorate it with a face, and let your imagination run wild. You can find instructions for making one in our Christmas Activity Pack!

And of course, be sure to watch our video about “12 Ways of Christmas Around the World” for even more festive fun. Until next time, happy adventuring and Merry Christmas!
