I’m still island hopping this week and my next destination is right off the beaten track...the Solomon Islands, a great place to come to escape the tourist routes. As well as a rich culture of music, panpipes being the most popular, what strikes you first on meeting the wonderful Solomon Islanders is their brilliantly blonde hair. This unique characteristic is shared by the majority of all Melanesian islanders and coupled with smiles and a jovial nature I can’t wait to spend a few days here.
My other reason for coming to these tropical volcanic islands is the interesting variety of wildlife most notably birds. I’ve come to see the Nicobar pigeon, no ordinary pigeon. This species is extremely colourful and spends much of its time flying from island nation to island nation in search of food. Another wonderful fact is that it is actually the closest living relative to the extinct Dodo!
Join me as we'll discover and learn about the world and every country it has to offer. I'll delve into my favourite experience, sight or people that I visit and meet along the way and give you some fun facts. I'll also be taking a snap as I travel so take a peel below to see where I've been so far.
